Steve Maruzs

October 5, 1922 – August 12, 2011

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Steve Maruzs on Friday, August 12, 2011 at the age of 88 years. Steve was born in Hungary and travelled to Canada with his mother in 1929 to join his father. He lived in East Coulee where he learned the baking trade and worked in the mines. Steve married Jolane Berze on July 1, 1946 in Lethbridge, Alberta. They moved to Calgary in 1951 from East Coulee where Steve returned to the baking industry. He then worked at the University of Calgary as a maintenance foreman until his retirement in 1988. Dad was always there for his family and others, giving with an open heart. Whenever he could and however he could, Steve would help anyone. He was a very kind, generous and loving man who enjoyed life to its fullest. Steve is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Jolane; daughters Brenda (Bob) Kunn and Elaine (Duane) Strandberg; two grandsons Geoffrey and Jason Strandberg; sisters-in-law Mary (Blondie) Mihalik, Helen (Harold) Deal and Liz Akroyd; numerous nieces and friends. He was predeceased by his father John in 1977 and mother Mary in 1976. Relatives and friends were invited to a Prayer Service held at FOSTER’S GARDEN CHAPEL, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Tuesday, August 16th, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass was celebrated at St. Michael Catholic Community Church, 800 – 85 Street SW on Wednesday, August 17th, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. Interment followed at Queen’s Park Cemetery. Steve’s family would like to thank all of the Doctors and nurses at the Foothills and Rockyview Hospital who took such good care of him. We will miss you, my loving Husband, Dad and Grandfather.You will live in our hearts always. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes Association, #204, 2323 – 32 Avenue NE, Calgary AB, T2E 6Z3.
