Born in Toronto, Ontario on April 5, 1950, Susan was the third oldest of eight children. She shared fond memories of time spent on Manitoulin Island and excitedly running down the street with her sisters to greet their dad when he would return from long work trips. Susan worked as a hairdresser for several years before moving out west to Calgary in the early 1970’s where she worked for Alberta Government Telephone. She married in 1975, and following the birth of her daughter in 1981 was proud to stay at home and dedicate her time to raising Melissa and running the household.
Known for her kind, nurturing nature and distinctive laugh, Susan worked hard to live the values her father taught her. She also valued the gift of education and worked incredibly hard as a single parent in the 1990’s, obtaining a B.A. in Psychology from the University of Calgary and an M.A. in Counselling from Gonzaga University.
Susan is lovingly remembered by her daughter, Melissa (Chris) Ballantyne, grandson Hayden, granddaughter Alexandria, and siblings Betty Dolan, Denise McCaig, Robert (Jane) McCaig, Nancy Ferguson, Michel McCaig and Richard McCaig. Nephews and nieces Ryan Martin, Jennifer (Jeff) Tetzlaff, Kristin McCaig, Ryan McCullough, Jes McCullough, Mercedes (Tristin) Baylis, Arlen McCullough and Daniel Ferguson.
Susan was predeceased by her father Robert Lloyd McCaig, mother Francoise Cousineau, brother David McCaig, best friend Elizabeth Umphrey, and nephew John D.R. Ferguson.
In respect of Susan’s wishes, no formal funeral service will be held.
