With profound sadness and heavy hearts, we announce the passing of a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, Terrance Daniel Ukrainec, P.Eng, on October 17, 2023, in Calgary, Alberta at the age of 66.
Terry is survived by his loving wife Jill, children Colin (Melody), Ken, and Alison, Grandsons Dylan and Cody, his mother Jean, siblings Diane and Darlene (Lorne) and nephew Spencer (Laura), Sister-in-law, Trish and Brother-in-law Bob (Susan) nieces Tara (Drew), Brenna (Mark) and nephew Shane (Cat) and Hodgins families. McCallum clan, Rideout’s, Kitts and numerous cousins and folks who were a part of the Fort McMurray, Calgary and Honey Harbour families.
Terry's journey through life was marked by exceptional accomplishments, deep passions, and unwavering kindness. Terry grew up in Kenora Ontario and from an early age enjoyed exploring the wilderness of Lake of the Woods with his family, and being engaged in sports notably Football, Hockey, Baseball, Basketball and Tennis making him an all-around athlete. Terry was an Ontario Scholar and pursued mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo. Through a Co-Op program, Terry found job placements in Kingston, Kenora and Fort McMurray. It was in Fort McMurray that Terry met Jill and was drawn to accept a job offer at Syncrude Canada in 1981. At this time, Syncrude was just starting up and with the numerous daily challenges, Terry thrived in this environment. Throughout his 34 years at Syncrude, Terry's wisdom, kindness, and quick wit ensured he was respected and appreciated by co-workers. Terry was rewarded for his dedication and hard work with many promotions within Utilities, Upgrading, Mining and Projects. Terry believed it was an engineer’s dream to work at Syncrude.
Terry & Jill married in 1983 and built a family creating an enjoyable rewarding life. With 3 kids, a mortgage, several pets, running 2 M&M Meat shops, volunteering on multiple community boards, and with a fabulous social life, Terry was a busy man. As a father, Terry's legacy is imprinted in the hearts of his children. He spent countless winter weekends coaching hockey and ensuring his children had opportunities to explore the world around them. He relished watching his own children evolve from energetic kids into strong, independent adults. Seeing his grandsons, Dylan & Cody laugh, play and grow brought immeasurable pride and joy to Terry's life.
Terry’s love of Curling was a defining embodiment of his character. It was at the curling rink where he truly shined, displaying precision, strategy, and a love for the big, timely shot. This love of the game took him, Jill and the fellow FMCC crew to travel across the country several times to watch The Olympic Curling Trials, The Vancouver Olympics and The Brier (where Terry was a frequent patron of The Patch).
The family were lucky to continue to connect with their Ontario roots, embracing the love of the outdoors and found themselves venturing to Honey Harbour each summer enjoying the waters of Georgian Bay. Terry filled the days with drop-in Tennis, golfing, kayaking, exploring the rocky shores of the Bay, sailing his Laser around Robert’s Island in hopes of setting a new personal best time, and slowly checking off the cottage’s honey-doo list.
Fort McMurray gave the family so many opportunities and many wonderful years. In 2013 Terry accepted a move to Calgary where he headed up Projects in Development. This move rounded up his engineering career and allowed more time for travel and starting new interests. These interests included wood carving, XC skiing and even becoming a season ticket holder for the Roughnecks and Calgary flames. Terry demonstrated his rich artistic talent by sketching his world travels and challenging himself by carving an 8ft totem pole which he spent 2 meticulous years completing, thus becoming the capstone to his artistic collection.
Terry’s life took on a new challenge with the changes in his health. Terry received excellent care through his case managers and the staff at Bow View Manor. The family thanks you for your patience, kindness and care to Terry. Thank you to Karla & Rexi for the strolls along the river and treating Terry to his favourite, an Apple Fritter. Thank you to our friends and family who took the time to stop in for a chat, watching the game, and talk of the old days – those visits meant the world to him and to the family.
Terry's dry sense of humor, creativity, and innate character endeared him to all who knew him. While he may be gone, his impact on our lives will remain. It was a life well lived but much too short.
A Celebration of Life for Terrance will be held Friday, October 27, 2023 at 2:00 PM at South Calgary Funeral Centre, 12700 Macleod Trail South, Calgary, AB T2J7E5.
