Wally Binda was born in Coleman, Alberta where he lived with his parents and sister. He enjoyed playing baseball, hockey, and curling, and made many lifelong friends whom he remained close with. Wally met his late wife, Diane, while attending junior high school in Coleman. They married in 1970 and moved to High River, where Wally worked as a ranch hand for a few years. After moving to Calgary, Wally spent his career working in the oil and gas industry as a drawing control technician for several companies including Petro Canada, Mobil Gas, Devon, and CNRL. He retired from CNRL in April 2022.
Wally was a committed volunteer with the Calgary Buffaloes Hockey Association for over 20 years. His role as team manager for several Midget AAA teams brought him tremendous pride and he was honored to have the “Wally Binda Manager of the Year” award named after him in recognition of his dedication to the organization and athletes. After retiring from his role with the CBHA Wally continued to support youth hockey and rarely missed cheering on both of his granddaughters at their hockey games.
Wally’s greatest pride was his family. He was most happy spending special occasions with his family and was always present to celebrate every success experienced by his children and grandchildren. Watching sports, especially golf, hockey, NASCAR racing, and cheering on his favorite Canadian curlers was Wally’s favorite way to relax. He also liked cooking, and had a keen interest in ancestry.
Wally is lovingly remembered by his children Terri Lynn and Matthew (Danielle) Binda; his two granddaughters Avery and Paige Binda; his sister Dorothy Anne (Gillis) Hruby; and sister-in-law Susan (Bernie) Demers.
He is also survived by his ex-wife, Sherri Foss; her children Bradley Robinson and Christa (Jordan) Watt; and her grandchildren Brent, Alexis, Leland, Chelsea, and Brayden.
Wally was predeceased by his wife Diane Binda (Jones), sister Helen Binda, and parents John and Anne Binda.
A Celebration of Life will be held at South Calgary Funeral Centre, 12700 Macleod Trail South, (at Lake Fraser Gate), on Wednesday, June 22, 2022 at 1:00 p.m.
If friends and family so desire, memorial donations may be made directly to KidSport Calgary in honor of Wally’s support for youth involvement in sports.
