Born August 1, 1936 Löpsingen, Germany, Walter was the youngest of 5 children, he was born, raised and worked with his father, brothers and sister on the family farm. Following in the footsteps of his 2 brothers, he left Germany and moved to Canada in 1958. Attending the church choir, Walter met Eugenie and they married April 2, 1960 and made Calgary their home. Over the 60 years they raised; Monica, Ron, Gabriele, Marlies, Wolfgang, Heidi & Oliver, and enjoyed their 10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren!! Walter pursued a career as an electrician. His entrepreneurial spirit pushed him to receive his Master’s Certificate and together, Eugenie and Walter started an electrical business in 1976, which still operates today by his eldest son, Ron. Walter was an amazing father and together with Eugenie were amazing parents. We all spent time traveling the roads in a large station wagon, attending church, visiting relatives, friends and enjoying breakfasts and hiking in the mountains. Walter has always been active in his church, participating in choir, singing to the glory of God and was always an involved and respected elder at St. Matthew Lutheran church.
He willingly shared his love of classical music, waking us early on Sunday morning to Bach organ and choral works. Some of his favourite activities, include tennis, skiing, playing chess, engaging in deep religious theological discussions with Uncle Art, and throwing his slippers (latschen) at the TV when the Flames were losing.
Walter is lovingly remembered by his wife, Eugenie, his children: Monica (Greg), Ron, Gabriele (Ken), Marlies (Jeff), Wolfgang (Krista), Heidi (Gary), and Oliver (Cindy). Grandchildren: Sheena (Paulo), Alex, Kaarina, Renee (Danny), Stephen (Hilary), Melissa, Kristen (Josh) Nicholas, Simone and Sebastien. Great Grandchildren; Charlie and Maisie Gene. He will also be sadly missed by his many nieces, nephews, cousins, and sister-in-laws here in Canada, the USA and Germany.
A private service will be held with interment to follow at Rocky View Garden of Peace. A celebration of Walter’s life will be planned in the future when restrictions are lifted.
