In 1935, Wing was born in a small village near Canton, China. He was a young child of 6 years old when he was adopted by Gow Leong from Hong Kong. Wing’s older brother stayed behind to live with his grandmother. Wing received love and care from his two stepmothers and older stepsisters. Unfortunately, his two stepmothers did not survive WWII. Later Gow, along with his new wife Chun Hop and the children, immigrated to Canada. Gow purchased Queen’s Cafe in Three Hills, AB.
In 1956, Wing corresponded for over two years with a Chinese lady in Hong Kong by the name of Shirley Lee (Lee Shui Hung). Wing later travelled to Hong Kong to marry Shirley in 1958. Wing brought Shirley to Canada and a year later, their first of 6 children was born.
Wing and Shirley both worked hard at Queen’s Cafe until 1962, when they moved to Calgary, AB. Wing became employed as a Chinese cook at various Calgary restaurants. He worked hard to support his fast-growing family, two of whom needed special formula for premature babies.
In 1973, Wing purchased Queen’s Cafe from Gow Leong. Together Wing and Shirley cooked and managed the business with their 6 children who took on the roles of waitresses and cashiers. Wing and Shirley became well known and integrated with the town folks. Upon leaving Three Hills in 1979, they were presented with a lovely, engraved silver tray attesting to the close relationship they had with the town and community. They also received a small plaque from the kids of Three Hills.
Later in 1979, Wing once again became a cook for various Chinese restaurants in Calgary. In 1981, Shirley passed away. A year later Wing married Mei Ying of China. Wing and Mei lived a quiet life together until Wing became afflicted with dementia in 2018. Mei predeceased Wing in 2023. Wing lived from 2018 to his time of passing at Wing Kei Greenview for Supportive Living. Wing was well taken care of by the lovely and caring staff at Wing Kei. Wing believed Wing Kei to be his new home and especially loved the chinese food served to him like clockwork.
Wing was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Wing had 6 children: Jane (Roy) Richards, Dorothy Da Roza, Helen (Tony) Ma, Richard Leong, Sharon Anderson, and Rita Leong (deceased).
Wing is also survived by his ten grandchildren: Andy, Jenica, Crystal, Roxanne, Clayton, Holly, Jonathan, Ashley, Justin and Ace.
Wing will be remembered by his adopted sisters and brother: Jone, Sally, Lily, Molly, Mary, Donna, Sandy and Stan.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of Life held at Foster’s Garden Chapel, 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary (across from Queen’s Park Cemetery) on Wednesday September 10, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Queen’s Park Cemetery.
