Ann was born in Groningen, Holland and met her Canadian Soldier on a stroll home from a dance. They began a courtship despite the language barrier and married October 18, 1945. Ann arrived in Canada as a “war bride” in Halifax N.S. July 23, 1946 to start her new life. She then took a train to Kitchener and settled into married life in Galt. She was only twenty and had been away from her husband for 9 months and did not know English or anyone. She had studied as a seamstress and put her skills to work sewing and settled into Canada. Ann worked at Knotty Pine Restaurant for a number of years and then stayed home to raise her children. She enjoyed making home movies of her family and playing the accordion. She later purchased herself an electric organ and would proudly play her music. She was an astute saver and could turn a nickel into a dollar. She loved her Dutch heritage but was also proud to become a Canadian Citizen May, 1969. She loved to write letters to her family back in Holland telling them of her life though it was not always easy. Mom and Dad were married for 63 years. Mom lived independently most of her life but dementia slowly took hold of her. She was thankful to those who visited her and was always pleasant. As her mind and memory diminished, she never lost her sense of humour.
A private family Internment will be held on Tuesday November 12, 2019 at Mountview Cemetery followed by a Celebration of Life for family and friends at 1 p.m. at the Blackshop Restaurant.
