With sadness and heavy hearts, we announce that George Bardwell passed away suddenly on Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at the age of 74, surrounded by the love of his family. He will be forever remembered by his loving wife of 54 years and his very best friend, Susan (nee Shantz); cherished by his daughter Dana (Keith) Abbott, son Marc Bardwell (David Bitonti), daughter Leslie (Roger) Gough; grandchildren Samantha and Sarah Abbott, Jacob and Noah Bardwell, Hayden and Paige Cameron, and Ethan and Drew Gough; and dearly missed by his sisters Beverly Folliott of Waterloo, and Bonnie (Bob) Dechene of St. Albert, Alberta. George was predeceased by his parents Horace and Verda Bardwell, and his mother- and father-in-law Olive Mannion and Howard Shantz. George’s generous spirit and love of helping others led him to work as a longtime volunteer with the Cambridge Memorial Hospital (Surgical Daycare). George also volunteered his time and energy as a former member of the Galt Kinsmen Club. Skilled as an athlete, George played hockey with the Waterloo Siskins and later acted as both Coach and General Manager for the Cambridge Winterhawks, of which he was also a founding member. George’s life was full of so many happy moments and special memories, especially the recent trip he took to Normandy and Paris with Susan for their 50th wedding anniversary. Friends and relatives are invited to a visitation at Barthel Funeral Home (566 Queenston Road, Cambridge) on Sunday, July 23rd from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. The Funeral Service will be at St. John’s Anglican Church (567 Queenston Road, Cambridge) on Monday, July 24th at 11:00 a.m. with a reception to follow in the church hall. As per George’s wishes, cremation has taken place, and his remains will be interred at Memory Gardens Cemetery with a private family ceremony. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made to the Cambridge Memorial Hospital Building Fund or the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
