Penny leaves behind her husband and best friend of 61 years, Terrance (Terry) Krawchyk. She was a proud and devoted mother to Jackie (Rob), Chris (Karen), and Trevor (Angie); and a cherished Nana to Danielle (Corey), Taylor, Clayton, Bradley, Blair, Alexis and Connor. Known lovingly as “Babchi”, she also leaves behind her great-grandchildren Coen and Wren. She will be deeply missed by her sisters (brother’s-in-law) Merle (John), Faith (Frank), Charmaine (Lee), her sister-in-law Judy, and brother-in-law Jeff as well as all her nieces and nephews.
Penny is preceded in death by her parents Charles “Chuck” and Joy Turner, her brother Neil, sister Carolyn, and brother and sister-in law Ed and Eleanor.
Penny was born and raised in Preston, where her adventurous spirit took root in a house built by her father’s own hands. A true tomboy at heart, she spent her childhood playing by the river, getting into mischief with her best friend Donna, and embracing the outdoors.
During her time at Preston High School, Penny was a cheerleader and also earned the title of “Preston Roller Skating Queen” in a competition – a win that took her all the way to Las Vegas. There, she surprised no one by taking home another trophy for sewing costume creations, and she was even invited to take a Hollywood screen test. But Penny chose a different path – she returned to Preston to marry the love of her life, Terry, and never looked back.
Penny remained passionate about the outdoors her entire life. Earlier in her life, she found great love in sailing – a love that began when her father built their family boat. She shared many memorable trips with her family sailing from Hamilton to the Toronto Islands. Penny also found joy in cottaging up north, fishing, golfing, bowling, curling and watching sports with Terry. She practiced yoga, volunteered often, and was always on the move. Penny’s energy was endless, and her hands were always busy with something meaningful.
But above all, Penny’s greatest devotion was to her family. She poured her heart into raising her children, actively always supporting her grandkids/great-grandkids and was always there when needed – steadfast, loving and dependable.
Penny will be remembered for her infectious smile, strong spirit, her deep commitment to those she loved, and the beautiful, full life she built with her family. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her.
Penny’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the team at Cambridge Memorial Hospital who provided her with such compassionate care. They would especially like to recognize Dr. Jonathan Marhong and ICU Nurse Rebecca.
Penny’s family invite all who knew and loved her to join them in celebrating her remarkable life. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 25th, at 1:00 PM at St. John's Anglican Church, 567 Queenston Road. Visitation will follow at Barthel Funeral Home, 566 Queenston Road, from 2:00 – 4:00 PM.
Details of an additional celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Penelope’s memory to either the Heart & Stroke Foundation, or the Canadian Cancer Society.
