Don was born in February 1929 in Montreal Que, to the late Frank Wadsworth and Katherine Graham. He was predeceased by his sister Joan and is survived by his brother Kenneth. He is deeply missed by his children Stephen Wadsworth (Oakville ON), Graham Wadsworth (Mission BC), Jennifer Wadsworth (Houston TX) and Dean Wadsworth (McLeods NB) and by his grandchildren Adam, Thomas, Stuart, Logan and Bill.
Don worked in finance and accounting for his long career and served as the financial director at the Soldier’s Memorial Hospital and then the Hotel Dieu. He was well respected by his staff and administrators for consistently balancing the books at the hospital, achieving accurate accounts and precise budgets, on time, without ever touching a spreadsheet. His children fondly recall the endless clacking of his adding machine at the kitchen table, doing his “gazintas” and “gazoutas”.
A born athlete, Don excelled at hockey and baseball in his youth, and enjoyed skiing, skating, fishing, and swimming. He told a family story of how in 1942 he cycled the 170 km journey from LaSalle to Richmond Que on an ancient bicycle, although we never found out how he got back home. However, golf was his lifetime passion and he was a regular player at the Restigouche Golf Course, where he regularly parred the course into his 80’s, and achieved a hole-in-one more than once, although sadly no witnesses remain. One of Don’s favorite authors P.G. Wodehouse said, “To find a man's true character, play golf with him". If you played golf with Don you would have found a man focused on achieving the perfect swing, simply for the beauty and grace of doing a thing well.
Don is remembered as a poet and a philosopher. He was a gentle, shy man, who loved words and riddles. He was eager to talk about any topic from quantum physics to money to religion and politics. If he didn't understand the topic he asked questions and tried to learn.
A celebration of life service for Ann and Don Wadsworth will be held on Thursday, July 23 at 2 pm at the Restigouche Golf Club. If attending, please confirm at https://evite.me/1Pabrh8EKf
