Gilberte MacLean

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Gilberte (Jill) MacLean (nee Roy) on December 26, 2025 at the age of 93 at the Campbellton Regional Hospital. She will be joining her husband Donald Kenneth MacLean, after missing him for 31 years.

Gilberte was born in what is now the Leopold Roy Heritage House in St. Quentin, NB to Donat and Amanda Roy (nee Theriault).

One of eight siblings she was predeceased by her brothers Leopold, Delphis, Valmond, and Silvio and sisters Yvonne Lebel and Yvette Gorayeb.

Gilberte was mischievous-adventurous as a youth, owning a Harley Davidson in her teens, being the best knife thrower at box cars until she was caught by her father (the stationmaster), changing the clock at school so classes ended an hour early (and the Sister teaching knew exactly who had done it when class resumed the next day without asking), sending one of her children to the neighbours to ask for a cup of alphabets on April Fools Day …

Gilberte was a very caring person, foremost with her immediate and extended family and also in her work in the nursing profession. Nursing first in a hospital setting there followed by 21 years as a beloved travelling nurse for the CLSC Malauze, and received many accolades from former patients and colleagues. Even in her later retirement, she volunteered to help care for patients at The Village Nursing Home in Campbellton during a strike there.

During the late 1960’s Gilberte was very involved in the Nursing Association of New Brunswick, working to improve the working conditions for nurses, at the executive level and as part of the bargaining committee. A long time member of the CWL and UCT, she was also involved in a number of charitable activities, in particular related to Campbellton Youth Centre, Production Restigouche Workshop and was also one of the members of the UCT working on the approval of and equipping of the playground in Atholville Miller Brae Millennium Park. Among the recognitions for her volunteer work is the Heart of Gold Award from Air Canada.

Gilberte loved flowers, roses were her favorite. She spent many hours working in her multiple flower gardens, first with her husband Don and later in retirement by herself.

She will be greatly missed by her children Jo-Ann MacLean, Louise MacLean-Robinson (Thomas) and Donald Clyde MacLean (Kirsten), grandchildren Timothy, Gillian, Caitlin, Dylan, Eric and Katrina as well as great-grandchildren Olivia, Hailey and Riley, her sister Jeannine and her many nieces and nephews.

A funeral mass for Gilberte will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Campbellton on Monday, January 12,2026 at 11:00

The family will welcome friends and family at Maher’s Funeral Home, 33 Lansdowne street in Campbellton on Monday, January 12 from 9:00am until the departure for the funeral.

C'est avec une grande tristesse que nous annonçons le décès de notre mère bien-aimée Gilberte (Jill) MacLean (née Roy) le 26 décembre 2025 à l'âge de 93 ans à l'Hôpital régional de Campbellton. Elle rejoint ainsi son mari Donald Kenneth MacLean, qui lui manquait depuis 31 ans.

Gilberte est née dans ce qui est aujourd'hui la maison patrimoniale Leopold Roy à Saint-Quentin, au Nouveau-Brunswick, de Donat et Amanda Roy (née Theriault). Elle avait sept frères et sœurs, dont ses frères Léopold, Delphis, Valmond et Silvio, et ses sœurs Yvonne Lebel et Yvette Gorayeb, tous décédés avant elle.

Gilberte était espiègle et aventureuse dans sa jeunesse. Elle possédait une Harley Davidson à l'adolescence, était la meilleure lanceuse de couteaux sur les wagons couverts jusqu'à ce que son père (le chef de gare) la surprenne, elle a modifié l'horloge de l'école pour que les cours se terminent une heure plus tôt (et la sœur enseignante savait exactement qui avait fait cela lorsque les cours ont repris le lendemain, sans même poser de questions), elle a envoyé l'un de ses enfants chez les voisins pour demander une tasse d'alphabets le jour du poisson d'avril...

Gilberte était une personne très attentionnée, surtout envers sa famille immédiate et élargie, mais aussi dans son travail d'infirmière. Elle a d'abord exercé dans un milieu hospitalier, puis a travaillé pendant 21 ans comme infirmière itinérante très appréciée pour le CLSC Malauze, où elle a reçu de nombreux éloges de la part d'anciens patients et collègues. Même après avoir pris sa retraite, elle s'est portée volontaire pour aider à soigner les patients de la maison de soins infirmiers The Village à Campbellton pendant une grève.

À la fin des années 1960, Gilberte s'est beaucoup impliquée dans l'Association des infirmières et infirmiers du Nouveau-Brunswick, œuvrant à l'amélioration des conditions de travail des infirmières, tant au niveau de la direction qu'au sein du comité de négociation. Membre de longue date de la CWL et de l'UCT, elle s'est également impliquée dans plusieurs activités caritatives, notamment en lien avec le Campbellton Youth Centre et le Production Restigouche Workshop. Elle a également été l'une des membres de l'UCT qui ont travaillé à l'approbation et à l'équipement de l'aire de jeux du Atholville Miller Brae Millennium Park. Parmi les distinctions qu'elle a reçues pour son travail bénévole, on peut citer le prix Cœur d'or décerné par Air Canada.

Gilberte aimait les fleurs, les roses étaient ses préférées. Elle passait de nombreuses heures à s'occuper de ses multiples jardins fleuris, d'abord avec son mari Don, puis seule après avoir pris sa retraite.

Elle manquera beaucoup à ses enfants Jo-Ann MacLean, Louise MacLean-Robinson (Thomas) et Donald Clyde MacLean (Kirsten), à ses petits-enfants Timothy, Gillian, Caitlin, Dylan, Eric et Katrina, ainsi qu'à ses arrière-petits-enfants Olivia, Hailey et Riley, à sa sœur Jeannine et à ses nombreux neveux et nièces.

Une messe funéraire pour Gilberte aura lieu à l'église St. Thomas Aquinas à Campbellton le lundi 12 janvier 2026 à 11 h.

La famille accueillera les amis et la famille au salon funéraire Maher's, situé au 33, rue Lansdowne à Campbellton, le lundi 12 janvier à partir de 9 h jusqu'au départ pour les funérailles.
