Mr. Philip James Smollett

Philip was born on May 15, 1925 in New Carlisle, Quebec, the third son of the late Dewey Smollett and the late Hilda (Ray) Smollett.

Philip proudly served overseas in the Second World War with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Upon his return to Canada, after the war, he worked for CN Rail, first in New Carlisle then moved to Campbellton in 1963. He retired in 1981 with 38 years of service. He was a long-time member of the Presbyterian Church, the Campbellton Curling Club, the Caledonian Society of Restigouche, the Masons, the Shriners and the Legion.

He will be sadly missed by his three children: Heather Lynn Cortes, June F. Smollett and David L. Smollett, two grandchildren: Phil Cortes (Valerie) and Eve-Lynn Smollett, two great-grandchildren: Lionel and Paul Cortes, extended family members and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, he was predeceased by his siblings and their spouses; Ray (Marian O’Meara), Gerald (Doreen Watt and Ruth Day) and Lloyd, an infant daughter, 6 nephews, 3 nieces, 8 sisters-in-law and 11 brothers-in-law.

A funeral service for Mr. Smollett will be held at Maher’s Funeral Chapel, 64 Lansdowne Street, Campbellton on Monday, December 22, 2025 at 3 p.m.

Visitation will be held at the chapel from 1:00 p.m. until time of service.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the nurses from E.M.H.(Extra Mural Hospital) and to caregivers: Joyce, Meghan, Wendy, Emma, Shelby and Marie for making it possible to fulfill Phil’s wish to stay at home for the past several years. Special thanks to Dr. F. Anine and the staff on Med-Surg and on Palliative for the compassionate care provided during Phil’s final nine days in the hospital.
