Thomas was born on March 30, 1944, in Listuguj, QC, to the late Madeline Metallic. He grew up in a large family led by a matriarch who instilled a strong work ethic and a deep sense of family in him and his siblings. He left the community to find work, including jobs in Maine’s potato industry and later as an ironworker in New England. He returned home to work as a conservation officer for Quebec before joining the Listuguj Rangers as one of the original members. He proudly served for over 25 years and was honored to work with people dedicated to protecting the river, the salmon, and the fishers who exercise their rights sustainably. He also loved his music (50s classics), old cars, black licorice, trivia, drives up to the woods, and John Wayne movies.
In his later years, he was diagnosed with dementia and lived at home for four years with support from his family. When the time came, he moved to the Waqatasg Elder Care Home, where he was cared for by a wonderful staff, socialized daily with other residents, staff, and visitors, often in his own language. He loved the food at Waqatasg, and his family ensured he was home for his meals when they took him out for drives.
He is survived by his children, Treena, Adam, and Corey (Amanda); his grandchildren, Madelaine, Montana, Mariah, Donovan, Corbin, Taylor, Serenity, and Miles; and his great-grandchildren, Kye, McKenna, Gage, Knox, Mylee, Willow, Carter, and Neiaseniget. Thomas is also survived by his siblings, Elias, Floyd, Lammie, Marlene, and Manfred (Koshe).
He was predeceased by his loving wife, Gail Metallic; his sons Eric, Dwayne, and Jeff Barnaby; his great-granddaughter Aezzlan; and his siblings Joe Robert and Anita.
