With great sorrow we report the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend Carl Richard "Dick" Engstrom (88) of Rawlins, Wyoming on March 26, 2017 in Dallas, Texas. He has gone to join his beautiful wife, Lorna May, for eternity.
Dick was born on June 19, 1928 in Rawlins, Wyoming to Carl Rudolf and Myrtle Louise (Smith) Engstrom. After graduating high school, he honorably served his country for two years as a member of the United States Navy. After his military service he attended the University of Wyoming, where he proudly cheered for the Pokes. When he returned to Rawlins, he began a career in banking where he worked from Teller to Vice President at The Rawlins National Bank. He left the bank after being elected Carbon County Treasurer in 1977 and served until his run for Wyoming State Treasurer in 1982. Dick returned to serve as Carbon County Treasurer in 1987 until his retirement in 1994. During his tenure as Treasurer he was elected as President of the Wyoming County Treasurers Association. Himself a politician, he was a leader in the Carbon County and Wyoming Democratic Party, campaigning for candidates at the county, state and presidential levels. He was a committed citizen of Rawlins and was a member of several clubs and organizations, most notably the Elks Club, where he served as Exalted Ruler of Lodge #609. In 1987, he was cast as the execution guard in the horror film, Prison, where he will live eternally on the silver screen.
While a patron at a local hang out, Cappy’s restaurant, he met the love of his life, Lorna May Stamp, and they married on April 28, 1962. Together they raised their family of six children and enjoyed the mountains and communities throughout Wyoming. He was a passionate reader of books and spent many hours amidst the pages of biographies, world histories and politics. He loved playing and watching basketball, in his early years playing for various city leagues. He enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and Wyoming Cowboys, camping, spending time with his dogs and parrot, Mr. Bill. Mostly, he appreciated the moments he spent alongside his best friend, Lorna.
