David Allen Courtright, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday, January 4th, in Dallas, Texas. Born on September 20th, 1953, in Rensselaer, Indiana, he was the son of the late Winifred Lois (Barlow) and LaMarr Almond Courtright. Although David spent most of his childhood in Indiana, his family moved to Alaska for a year when he was 13, and this experience sparked a lifelong passion for the outdoors and environmental conservation.
A proud Eagle Scout and a member of the varsity swim team, David graduated from Rensselaer Central High School in 1971. He went on to attend Indiana University, where he earned degrees in Biology and Chemistry, forging lasting friendships along the way. A devoted fan of the Indiana Hoosiers and Chicago Bears, David was thrilled by the Hoosiers’ recent College Football Playoff appearance.
David enjoyed a distinguished career in industrial water treatment, dedicating 24 years to Chem-Aqua, where he served as a Technical Manager in his final years. Outside of his professional life, David was deeply involved in his Presbyterian church, where he volunteered for many years as a youth mentor and led the Men's Breakfast program. He also dedicated many years to mentoring young men as a Scoutmaster for several Boy Scout troops.
David is survived by his beloved wife of 22 years, Libby (Hellman) Courtright; children Michael (Jessica) Courtright and Kelly (Mark) Williams; stepchildren Charlotte Hellman (Vasilii Latashiline) and Erick Hellman, whom he embraced as his own; and five grandchildren, Victoria Orena Courtright, Lana Courtright, Eli Williams, Hazel Williams, and Madeline Latashiline. He is also survived by his former wife, Deborah Courtright; sister Kristi Slaby; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
David's cremated remains will be scattered, and a celebration of his life will take place in Bloomington, Indiana, at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Boy Scouts of America or the National Parks Service as both organizations held a special place in David’s heart throughout his life.
