James began his remarkable journey in Bradley Bilston, England. As an infant, he crossed the Atlantic by boat with his mother, arriving in the United States and continuing by train to Texas, where he would grow up and build a life full of passion, kindness and curiosity.
Raised in Dallas, James graduated from North Dallas High School where he was a proud member of the football team, a track and field athlete specializing in discus and shot put, and was president of the chess club. He earned his Bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Texas at Arlington and began his career as a supervisor for Safeway.
Driven by a love for food and hospitality, James later went to culinary school and found his calling in the kitchen. He worked in prestigious hotel kitchens, seafood restaurants and senior living communities, always bringing creativity and care to every dish he prepared.
Outside of work, James lived life with energy and joy. He completed several marathons, loved to dance , and was an avid reader – often traveling between libraries in Dallas, Garland and Irving in search of the right book. He had a deep appreciation for the theater and a lifelong love of cooking. One of his favorite pastimes was discovering new places that have great Texas barbecue with his beloved wife Lollie.
James was known for his generous spirit and warm heart. He often shared his signature chocolate torte with family, friends, and fellow members of the Sassy Silver Dancers. He lived by the simple guideline: “Love God. Love your neighbor.”
James is survived by his wife Dolores Lollie Tompkins of Dallas, sister Barbara McVay and brother-in-law David McVay of Irving, brother-in-law Bill Aves of Azle, sister-in-law Evelyn Aguirre (husband Jesse), numerous nieces, a nephew, great-nieces, great nephews, a great-great niece and a great-great nephew. He is predeceased by his daughter Natilie Chaves, his sister Rita Aves, and his parents Joe and Dorothy Chaves.
James will be remembered for his warmth, wit, and unwavering generosity – a man who danced through life, cooked with love and read with wonder.
