A brief graveside service will be held at the DFW National Cemetery at 2:15pm.
John was was born at home on September 15th, 1924 in Chickasha, Oklahoma to John Henry and Eva Mae Fitzpatrick. He gave his life to Christ at the age of 10. After John graduated from Kermit High School in 1943, he joined the Navy and served as an aviation mechanic during World War II. While stationed in the Dallas area, in 1944. he met the love of his life, Dorothy Gould. After just 3 months, they eloped and enjoyed 64 years together before Dorothy passed away in 2009.
John worked as a parts manager for Bennett Motor Company, Lee Jarmon Ford and Newt Miller/Ray Adams Ford for a total of 26 years. He spent the next 12 years working for Eaton Trucking Company until he retired. However, John and Dorothy were not ones to sit around. They took classes and were a part of the Citizen's Patrol for Carrollton. They were both long-time members of First United Methodist Church where John sang in the choir for 33 years and was even named Father of the Year in 1987. He was also a member of the Farmer's Branch Senior Ukelele Band who traveled around the area putting on concerts. He loved to sing, perform and be silly. Even the day he died, he was singing to his family and the nurses caring for him One of his accomplishments that he was most proud of was being a key leader in establishing the Senior Center here in Carrollton. In 1993, a number of Carrollton residents petitioned the city for their own Senior Center. John was named spokesman for the group and worked tirelessly as the city passed a bond, broke ground and built the amazing facility that so many enjoy today.
John is survived by 3 children and their spouses: Carolyn Harris (Jerry) of Carrollton, Debbie Lane (David) of Carrollton and Mike Fitzpatrick (Debi) of Plano as well as 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren. He was affectionately known as Poppy to all of them. If you every met John, you knew he was a character. He would sing you a song and help you in any way he could. And before you parted ways, he would be sure to shake your hand and leave you a piece of candy. He was the Candyman to all, Poppy to many, Dad to 3 and husband to a wonderful woman. We will carry him in our hearts and tell stories of him for generations to come.
