Robert (Bob) Steven Brown, age 95, joined his Lord Jesus Christ in heaven on March 14th, 2025. Bob was the son of Joseph Hurshal and Avis Brown. He was born and raised in Atlanta, TX with his younger brother Waylon.
Bob helped his mom run their family-owned business, Brown’s Café, throughout high school until he graduated and enlisted in the Texas National Guard. He met his future wife Jessie Mae in high school and called her every day during her last class as she didn’t have a home phone. She would hear the phone ring like clockwork and her teacher would dismiss her to take the call.
In August 1947, Bob attended Harding University and completed his freshman year before having to return home to help with the family business. Bob and Jessie married in 1950 as soon as Jessie graduated high school and remained in Atlanta for several years.
In 1953, their family returned to Harding for Bob to complete his English degree. He was a member of Sigma Tau Sigma all four years, Men’s Glee Club, Class Vice-President his freshman year, and was a member of the Student Preacher’s Organization his senior year.
He graduated from Harding in 1955 and taught high school English in Stuttgart and Hazen, AR. In the summers he attended the University of Arkansas, where he completed a Master’s Degree in Education. In 1958 Bob moved the family back to Searcy, AR to join the Harding faculty to teach English.
In 1964, Bob moved the family to Pennsylvania when an opportunity arose to teach English at the growing Northeastern Christian Junior College. While there, he completed a Master’s Degree in Library Science and became their Head Librarian. They remained in PA for 48 years before returning to TX in 2012 to be near family.
Bob was active in the Church of Christ, where he served as an Elder for many years, and was involved in the PA Prison Ministry, where he led numerous people to the Lord. He preached to anyone who would listen and made it his practice to ask everyone he met where they attended church and was sure to invite them if they didn’t have a church home. He never met a stranger and made a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. Bob was a kind soul and a faithful servant of the Lord. He is no doubt rejoicing with Him in heaven.
Bob is preceded in death, just 28 days prior, by his beloved wife of 74 years, Jessie Brown, brother Waylon Brown, mother Avis Brown, and father Hurshal Brown. He is survived by his five children, Larry Brown and wife Bonita, Carolyn (Brown) Baither and husband Rick, Mark Brown and wife Isis, Robert Brown and wife Donna, and Lisa (Brown) Lowary and husband Casey. Additionally, he is survived by his nine grandchildren Justin, Caitlin, Brandon, Daniel, Steven, Tracey, Nicole, Lexi, and Olivia. He is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Tessa, Troy, Kiersten, and Ian.
A memorial service will be held for Bob Brown on Saturday, April 5th at 10:00 am at the Carrollton Church of Christ. 1023 Seminole Trail, Carrollton, TX. 75007
