

CASA GRANDE - Frederick "Fred" Jacob, 91, died on Nov. 1, 2018, at The Garnet of Casa Grande, where he lived for the past three years.Mr. Jacob was born on April 20, 1927, to Josephine and Charles Jacob in the German Yorkville section of New York City and raised there. He attended school in New York City and in 1945 joined the Merchant Marine. In 1953 while visiting A-Bar-A Ranch in Upstate New York, he met the love of his life, Carmen Zabala DeMott. They married in January 1954 and later that year he was drafted into the Army. He served a tour of duty during the Korean War as a specialist two finance officer and received a medal for developing a payroll system for the troops.After his return, he and Carmen moved to Brentwood, Long Island, where their beloved son Kenneth "Kenny" Jacob was born in 1961. He was a special needs boy but they felt he had special gifts for sharing love, huge smiles, laughter and compassion with everyone he met. Mr. Jacob encouraged him to participate in Special Olympics bowling, cross country and other activities. Mr. Jacob worked for Pomerantz Trucking Company for many years and as a customs broker for Swissair. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and loved John Wayne movies. He lived in Casa Grande for 28 years.Survivors include his wife of nearly 65 years and many nieces, nephews and godchildren. He was preceded in death by his son.Funeral Mass celebrated at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church.Memorial contributions may be made in his honor to: Hospice Compassus, 1675 E.
