Born in Mexico, Missouri, she was the daughter of Carl and Violet Foster. Her early years were spent in St. Charles, MO. She married Donald Barklage in 1954, and he died in 1989. She then married Robert Kellerman in 1992. In retirement they travled from coast to coast for 12 years, living in their motor home while building churches with the group Laborers for Christ.
