Born in Globe, AZ to Grace and Thomas Pifer, he was a lifelong resident of Globe. He worked as a fireman for Miami Copper and then for many years in retail sales for Purity Brands, his wife's family business. He was a life member of Elks and a member of Gila County Cattle Growers.
