Luke Fernando Jose, a cherished member of our community, departed this earthly realm at the age of 87 on a September day that carries his spirit anew. Born on July 27, 1938, in the tranquil village of Anegam within the Tohono O’odham Nation, Luke was a son of Sacramento Jose and Juana Loute. With a heart full of ambition, he embarked on his educational journey at St. Johns High School, where he graduated in 1958, later pursuing studies at the esteemed Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kansas.
His life's path led him to construct the very highways that connected his beloved reservation, but after a decade of labor, a noble call beckoned. At the age of 23, Luke answered the call of duty, enlisting in the U.S. Air Force, where he served with honor and dedication.
The tapestry of his life intertwined with that of his beloved wife, Nina Ventura, when they exchanged vows on Christmas Day, December 25, 1966, at St. Ignatius Church in North Komelik. This sacred union marked a momentous occasion, as they became the first couple to be wed in the newly dedicated church, sealing their love under the sunlight of that joyful day.
Luke devoted much of his post-military life to the Hecla/El Paso Mining Corporation and then shared his passion for education at Santa Rosa Boarding and Day School, where he touched countless lives until his retirement. His voice resonated strongly in the realm of politics, serving on the Sif-Oidak District Council and contributing fervently to his community and church.
Above all, Luke found profound joy in his family, cultivating bonds that continued to grow as he cheered on his favorite sports teams.
As we gather to remember this remarkable man, we acknowledge the loves lost along the way—his parents, siblings, and a son, Gilbert Jose, along with two grandsons, Anthony and Jeremy Jose. Yet, the light of his legacy remains bright in the hearts of those who survive him: his beloved wife of fifty-eight years, Nina Jose; his children, Arlene Wood, Isaac Jose, Martin Jose, and Christie Jose; alongside nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward his spirit.
A celebration of Luke's rich life will commence with a wake at St. Ignatius Church, North Komelik Community at 6:00 PM on Thursday, October 2, 2025, followed by a heartfelt Funeral Service on Friday, October 3, 2025, beginning with Mananitas at 4:00 AM, final viewing at 5:00 AM, and culminating in his burial at the North Komelik Cemetery.
Arrangements have been entrusted to J. Warren Funeral Services, as we honor a man whose life was a testament to love, resilience, and unwavering commitment to family and community. Luke Fernando Jose will be forever remembered, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all.
