Pastor Burgess was born in Sugartown, La., on July 12, 1944, to Wiley and Dotty Burgess and spent his childhood years in that area, where his father, Reverend Wiley Burgess was pastor of Welcome Church, a country church located near DeRidder, La. He attended high school in Oakdale, La., and met his Cajun sweetheart, Rose Marie Fontenot from the neighboring town of Mamou during this period; they were married shortly thereafter.
Pastor Burgess was born again, receiving the baptism of the Holy Ghost, on July 3, 1967. The Lord called him to the ministry within a year of that time. He spent the first few years of his ministry in Jennings, La., and Highlands, TX under the leadership of Pastor Jerry Solomon. In 1972, he became Pastor in Waynesboro, MS.
The Lord called Pastor Burgess to the state of Washington and he arrived Jan. 1, 1975. He became Pastor of a small congregation in Centralia, Wash., in 1976. During this time he worked in his trade as a pipefitter/welder and directed all his resources toward pastoring and evangelizing the Centralia/Chehalis area. The congregation soon outgrew its small building, and built a new building at its current location, Jesus Name Pentecostal Church, on Bishop Rd. in Chehalis. He pastored this congregation for 33 years until his retirement in July 2009.
He is remembered by those closest to him, his family and loved ones, as a great man of God. He deeply loved his wife and children and his delight was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was a compassionate man with a great love for people. He held earthly things and material possessions in low esteem because God, and the eternal things of God, meant everything to him. He deeply loved his brother and sisters also. For him, nothing was more important than his family.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Rose, his son, Shannon Burgess and daughter Carla Daily, his twin brother, Bill, his sisters, Delta Fay Ashworth, Kay Clark, and Stephanie Bigner, as well as six grand children and two great-grand children.
His final wish was for his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to meet him just inside the Eastern Gate.
Visitation may be made between the hours of 7:00 PM and 8:00 PM, Friday, Nov. 25 at Jesus Name Pentecostal Church.
