Richard was born in Boulder, Colorado, on March 24, 1936. His family moved to Medford, Ore, in 1944. His parents died when he was very young, so his older sister, Helen, along with her husband, took him in to raise him with their five children.
At the age of 17, Richard joined the United States Navy, joking that he ‘already knew all that he needed to know’ from books. He bravely served our country for twenty years, including a tour of duty in Vietnam in 1970.
He married the love of his life, Maxine, in 1957, after a whirlwind 12 day courtship. He and Maxine lived life to the fullest; enjoying travelling, hiking, and spending time with family.
He earned his Drug and Alcohol Counselor Certification in 1976. He and Maxine founded New Directions Counseling, where Richard was an owner, administrator, and care provider until his retirement in 1998.
Richard is preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Edith Day- Hopkins; sisters, Helen McGee, June Bowers, Fran Sutter, Patricia Caster, and Jeanne Tachera; and brothers, Claren Hopkins, and Keith Hopkins.
He is survived by his loving wife, Maxine Hopkins; sons, Curtis Hopkins, of San Francisco and Kevin Hopkins, of Ellensburg; grandchildren, Blair, Allison, Chandler, Darren, Emma, and Collin; great-granddaughter, Olive; and numerous nieces and nephews in Southern Ore.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, November 6, at Sticklin Funeral Chapel, 1437 S Gold Street in Centralia, with a reception to follow in the Chapel’s Hospitality Room. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, November 7.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salvation Army, or charity of donor’s choice.
