Amos Russell Snodgrass (RUSS), formerly of Glen Mills, Media, and Drexel Hill, PA, and Detroit, MI, died in his new home state of North Carolina. He was one day short of his 92nd birthday when he passed.
Russ was a WW II Navy Seabee before spending most of his working career at the Atlantic Richfield Oil Refinery in Philadelphia. He spent 42 years there, starting as an hourly laborer and finishing as the Fire, Safety, and Security Chief of the refinery. In some of his spare time and in his retirement, he devoted himself to community service. He ran an Easter Seals Handicapped Swim Program, taught 55-Alive Driver Safety classes, and volunteered in schools and Red Cross summer swim programs; and he was a past president of the Lansdowne AARP chapter.
But most of his time was devoted to his family, friends, and neighbors. He was married for 60 years to his love, Janet, until her death in 2007. Also waiting for him in the heavens are his daughter, Lois, his grandson, Ryan, his parents, brother, brother-in-law, three sisters-in-law, and other dear relatives and friends. He leaves behind his daughters and sons-in-law, Gwen Aber (Rev. David) and Gail Meinke (his “buddy” Jim), and two grandchildren, Dana and Drew Aber. He also leaves behind many loving relatives and friends,
Russ traveled to almost all of the 50 states and six of the seven continents. He swam and sailed (or, as he would say, he “dipped his stick”) in many of the waters of the world. He loved adventure, he loved people, and he loved life.
A celebration of Russ’s life will take place later in the spring in the Philadelphia area. Burial will be private.
