Andy was born on June 3, 1938, to Doris and Russell McAllister in Charlotte, NC. He grew up working on his family’s farm with his 5 brothers and 2 sisters. He attended East Mecklenburg High School. For 10 years, he was an employee of A&P Warehouse. In 1963, he decided to take a leap of faith and establish his own business, McAllister Greenhouses. Andy was an incredibly hard worker who worked endlessly and invested much of his life in growing his company and providing for his family. He loved riding around on his golf cart, giving advice, educating people about his plants, smiling and talking to his customers.
Andy was a dedicated follower of Jesus. He was a member of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church in Monroe, NC. Prior to his time at Bethlehem, he was a member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC for 75 years, serving as the church treasurer for 20 years.
Andy loved the beach and fishing. He enjoyed going to Myrtle Beach, sitting on the dock and talking for hours with his beach buddies. He rode around on the golf cart or lawn mower to work on his beach houses. After a full day, he welcomed friends to spend time talking and laughing on the screened porch of his beach house. Andy also greatly enjoyed planning, organizing and hosting his famous fishing trips. That was the highlight of every year for him, and decades of memories were made with dear friends fishing together.
Andy leaves behind his wife and love of his life for 66 years, Eleanor Young McAllister. He is also survived by his daughter, Audrey Laine Mershon (Marc); granddaughters, Alexandra (Lexi) and Daisee; daughter-in-law, Gina McGee McAllister; grandson; Brent Rushing (Misha); granddaughters, Lindsey VanHoose (Charles) and Sydney Hastings (Michael); and great-grandsons, Levi and Lincoln Rushing.
