Brunhilde "Hilde" Schmid

Brunhilde Schmid, known as “Hilde” to those close to her, passed peacefully on Saturday, September 9, 2023. Her family was with her as Hilde’s strong-willed, kind-hearted soul left this earth, letting her know that it was time to be at peace and no longer suffer in the body that could do no more. She was born on April 25, 1941 to Herbert Paul Preis and Charlotte Dohms Preis in her home country of Germany.

Hilde was a devoted wife to Raimund. Their paths met in the small town of Ebersbach an der Fils in Germany, after both families were displaced during World War II, and were married there in 1962. Raimund’s work in the textile industry took them all over the world, mostly in Asia, until a work assignment brought the family to Charlotte in 1972 where they have resided since.

Hilde and her family shared a love for animals, and it’s no secret to anyone that knows the family that cats were on top of the list. It would be wrong to not mention Pippin, her beloved cat that is truly an angel dropped straight from heaven at a time when she needed him the most. There really is no other explanation for how he came into her life.

There are no words to describe the love and devotion she gave to her daughters. More times than not, she traveled alone with an infant and small child through dangerous parts of the world to join her husband. Even as adults, until the day she died, she was always there for her daughters and granddaughter. Her memory and spirit will be greatly missed by her entire family that she dearly loved.

Hilde was the 2nd born of three children; younger brother, Peter Preis (deceased) and older sister, Barbara Wild, who still resides in Germany. Hilde is survived by her husband, Raimund Schmid; her two daughters, Alexandra Schmid and Annette Riggsbee; her granddaughter, Blair Riggsbee; and many other loving extended family members.

A Celebration of Hilde's life will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2023 at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-MInt Hill Road, Mint Hill, NC. A reception will follow the service.
