I remember Sgt. Ross from my police cadet training at the Charlotte Police Academy in 1985. I remember Sgt. Ross teaching me to shoot a revolver and shotgun.  He made an impact on me and I still think back on my experience there with him. Even after retiring from police work myself, over 30 years later, I still remember what a great man he was.  I was a better police officer for knowing him. Thank you, Sgt. Ross, for everything. May God bless your family.

I met Lolly in 1975 when I joined the Charlotte Police Department. I was an experienced pistol shot before I became a Police Officer, Lolly refined that in me!
Once I was at the range for qualification and the rule was if you did not qualify you had to shoot again until you did.Well I was on the clock and loved to shoot so I decided to purposely not make a qualifying score. There was a Coke can on the bank just left of my target and I would put a few rounds where they were supposed to go and then bounce the can around some. This went on all the way back to the 50 yard line with Lolly watching over as he always did. Time to score and Lolly started checking off the shot holes, I had 30 in the center and 20 misses! I commented that I did not qualify and would have to shoot again. Lolly walked over to the coke can picked it up and wrote 100 on the target telling me to get off the range,I wasn't going to waste his time having more fun!  
I love Sgt.Lolly Ross and I will miss him dearly!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time in rhe loss of a kind,caring and wonderful man that helped me through my 30 years at the Charlotte Police Department.  I wish I could list all the kind deeds and helping hands I saw Clifford giving the many recruits but there is not enough paper in the world there were so many. I am so proud to have known such a great and gentle man who cared so much for others, rest in peace Clifford with my friend Ken Hancock bless u both.

I knew Lolly since 1978. I worked with him for years even after he retired. He was a giving man, a kind man. Anyone who knew Lolly was better for it. He was more than a friend. My heart and prayers are with all of you at this time of loss.

I knew Lonnie when he was the Range Master for the Charlotte Police Dept.  This was prior to the consolidation of the Charlotte PD and Mecklenburg County PD.  At the time I was with the Mecklenburg County Police.  I always found Lolly to be a friendly man with a great sense of humor.  I admired his running the firearms range in a safe manner which is so important when dealing with police recruits and even experienced officers. He was very good at his job!  I'm with everyone who knew him in saying he was a great man and will be sorely missed.  My thoughts go out to his family in this time of loss.

Sgt. Ross taught me to shoot many years ago.  Today I teach others.  He was always one of my favorite people in the CPD; always smiling and trying to make others smile.  Actually, he tried to make them laugh out loud!  I pray that God's peace will surround and comfort your family.

Next to my father, I loved and admired Cliff more than any other man. He was my mentor and friend at CPD for many years. Thank you so much for all that you did for me and meant to me. Heaven is a better place.

Doris, and the family, I was one of the thousands of police officers blessed enough to have been trained to handle my Charlotte Police Dept. service revolver and semi automatics under Sgt. "Lolly" Ross. His skill was unequaled, but it was his patience and compassion that made it all seem so second nature and  "at home." I will never forget him and I thank you for allowing all of us at CPD to have him for those years. "Go rest high on that mountain Sarge."

I truly admired you for far too many reasons to list here.
