Dannie, known as Daddy Dan to his grandchildren, was a lifelong resident of Mecklenburg County. Born in Charlotte on December 13, 1935 to Fred and Elizabeth (Dunn) Hargett, Dannie was the youngest of 10 siblings. After graduating from West Mecklenburg High School in 1954, Dannie was trained as a paratrooper and served as an intelligence officer with the Army. He married his wife Joan in 1959, and they later settled in Mint Hill with their 3 sons Mike, Jeff, and Doug. Dannie worked in insurance, starting Hood Hargett with family friend Chuck Hood. For many years Dannie was a passionate volunteer with UMAR at their local group homes and as an event speaker, running their annual golf tournament while also in charge of the United Cerebral Palsy Telethon. He regularly vacationed with his family at their favorite getaway, Sunset Beach. A lover of satire and Civil War history, Dannie will be remembered for his witty sense of humor and his devotion to Joan and his family.
Dannie is survived by his wife of 66 years Joan (King) Hargett; his sons Mike and Doug Hargett; his grandchildren Matthew Hilton and Allison, Saban, and George Hargett; his daughters-in-law Cathy and Sun Mee Hargett; and his many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He is preceded in death by his son Jeff; his parents Fred and Elizabeth; and his 9 older siblings Frederick, Charlotte, Adelaide, Thomas, Yvonne, Corrine, Pauline, Benjamin, and Ronald.
