Born on July 24, 1938, in Charlotte, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie L. Carriker and Lois W. Carriker. She was also preceded in death by her beloved son, Stacy G. Mitchell.
Dixie is survived by her devoted son, Tracy G. Mitchell; her sister, Starr C. Estes; and her daughter-in-law, Allison E. Mitchell. She leaves behind a family who will miss her deeply—not just for her love and strength, but for her sharp wit, humor, and the way she made life more interesting.
A graduate of East Mecklenburg High School, Dixie went on to earn her bachelor’s degree in psychology and counseling from Appalachian State University. She later completed a master’s degree in counseling from East Carolina University. In her professional life, she worked as a vocational rehabilitation counselor, advocating for those in need and helping people find independence, dignity, and purpose.
Dixie was a woman of deep compassion and strong convictions. She had a tender heart for the underprivileged and those facing hardship. Her kindness showed in both big and small ways—she was a thoughtful and generous gift giver, always offering tokens of love that made others feel seen and cherished.
She was a loving, protective, and encouraging mother to her twin boys. “I love you” was something she never left unsaid. She expressed her love through her actions as well, often crocheting blankets and scarves for family and friends, creating lasting reminders of her warmth and care.
Dixie had a special love for animals, especially cats and lions, and held a deep affection for her beloved cat, Coco. She also had a passion for antiques and a wonderfully eccentric sense of style, delighting in unique pieces and surrounding herself with beauty—including her cherished chandeliers and her favorite color, purple.
Her spirit will live on in the many lives she touched.
A visitation with the family will be held on Monday, April 27, 2026, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill, North Carolina.
