

Born on September 2, 1925, Doris was the daughter of the late Neily Orman Alexander and Hattie Viola Smith Alexander. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Glenn Alexander, Mary Neil Alexander, David Alexander, Franklin Alexander and Ralph Alexander.
Doris graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, Women’s College in 1947 and earned a Masters Degree in Social Work from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1956. Her professional life was devoted to helping and protecting children through social work, working at an adoption agency in Virginia, Children’s Hospital in Philadelphia, and ending her career at North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services where she retired in 1991.
She was an active member of Matthews Presbyterian Church, serving as an elder. In retirement, she volunteered in the school system and was an active member of the Charlotte Friendship Force. She was a devoted sister and beloved aunt to her many nieces and nephews. She enjoyed birdwatching, travel, and hosting family celebrations.
Doris is survived by two sisters, Ruth Ingerson and Nancy Church, and by 12 nieces and nephews, Sam Alexander, Betsy Alexander, Charles Alexander, Stephen Alexander, Karolen Bowman, Alice Ingerson, Ann Ingerson, Helen Ingerson, Gordon Ingerson, Gene Alexander, Robin Alexander Embry and Jennifer Higgi.
A visitation will be held Wednesday evening, May 11, 2016 from 7:00pm until 8:30pm at McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Rd., Mint Hill, NC 28227.
Graveside services will be held at Providence Presbyterian Church Cemetery at 2:00pm on Thursday, May 12, 2016.
