Emily is survived by Bob, her beloved husband of 59 years, her daughter Lisa and son-in-law Don, her daughter Tracy and son-in-law Scott. She was a devoted and loving Grandmommie to Bobby, Jessie, Gianna, and Christian, and great-Grandmommie to Laurel and Leslie. She was met in Heaven by her granddaughter and namesake, Emily, her brother Bert, and several dogs and grand dogs.
Emily was born and raised in Wilmington, NC and graduated from New Hanover High School in 1962. She obtained her bachelor’s degree in education at UNC Greensboro in 1966. Her career as an elementary school teacher spanned over 25 years. She taught in Newport News, Virginia, then at Plaza Road Elementary School in Charlotte, and Bain Elementary School in Mint Hill. She retired to help care for her grandchildren in 1995 and helped them grow into kind, loving, and amazing adults.
Emily was also an accomplished tennis player, winning the NC state team championship several times. She also enjoyed golf, gardening/pulling weeds, and spending as much time as possible on the beach. Emily, her daughters and granddaughters loved searching for Keyhole Limpet shells at the east end of Sunset Beach, NC. Emily liked playing games with her family and never once cheated during the games. She also thoroughly enjoyed serving her family and friends and was so thoughtful and generous with her time and love. Emily was “the queen of questions,” a devoted listener and was sensitive to unmet needs. She would help in a quiet manner, never seeking attention or boasting.
Emily and Bob resided in Mint Hill and Matthews for many years until recently moving to Calabash, NC to be closer to family. Emily was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Plaza Road United Methodist Church, Blair Road United Methodist Church, and The Road Global Methodist Church. After moving to the coast, Emily and Bob attended Valorous Church in North Myrtle Beach, SC with their daughters.
As a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend, Emily’s love for others was limitless. Her beauty, compassion, amazing sense of humor, and strength was boundless. She exuded joy in the triumphs of others and carried many of us through difficult trials. She will be deeply missed, and her impact will last for generations to come.
