He was the beloved son of the late Margaret Elizabeth Cartwright Wait and Francis Henry Wait.
George was preceded in death by his infant son, William Hunt Wait, whom he carried in his heart always.
George is survived by his devoted and loving partner, Anna Windsor Eagle; his siblings, Frances Henry Wait Jr., Patrick Timothy Wait, Margaret Elizabeth Hance, and Anne Marie Wait Donnell; and his loving children—his whole world—Jonathan Stokes Wait, Hannah Sullivan Wait, Charles Samuel Wait, and Addy Margaret Wait, whom he shared with their mother, Susan Erwin Wait.
Above all else, George was most proud of his title as “Father.” Every day of his life was shaped by his devotion to ensuring his children felt deeply loved, supported, and protected. His legacy lives on through them.
George was an adventurer at heart. He loved to travel, explore, and experience the beauty and diversity of the world. During his time at Western Carolina University, he was a proud member of the Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, where he formed lifelong friendships and developed a deep appreciation for brotherhood that stayed with him throughout his life.
As a dedicated Scout Troop Leader, he found great joy in mentoring young people and sharing his love for the outdoors. Whether around a campfire, on a long hike, or teaching life skills, George believed some of life’s most important lessons were learned in nature. Guided by the Scout motto, “Be Prepared,” he lived out those values in both word and action. He was especially proud that his sons earned the rank of Eagle Scout—a reflection of the values he held dear: service, perseverance, and integrity.
George found great purpose in his work and took pride in the relationships he built over decades in his career. Through the people he mentored and the everyday moments he shared, he formed lasting bonds with colleagues and friends alike. In his most recent role as a Regional Sales Manager with Reily Foods Company, George continued to bring passion, dedication, and genuine care for others in all that he did. He was deeply proud of his work and the impact he made.
With a servant’s heart, George lived a life rooted in compassion, generosity, and joy. He was known for his big personality, fun spirit, and an unforgettable laugh that could fill any room and instantly put others at ease. That warmth showed up in everything he did and in every relationship he built. A true lover of animals, he opened both his home and his heart by adopting several dogs, believing wholeheartedly in kindness toward all living beings.
George poured himself into his community, working tirelessly through booster clubs and PTAs, dedicating nearly two decades of service with the YMCA, and serving as a long-time volunteer and donor. He proudly served his country as an Army Reservist, carrying that commitment with honor throughout his life. He was especially passionate about supporting NC Disaster Relief efforts, offering his time and energy to assist those impacted. Whether helping a neighbor, supporting a cause, or simply showing up, George lived each day with quiet selflessness and a genuine desire to make the world a better place.
A man of deep and abiding faith, George offered comfort, wisdom, and steady encouragement through his knowledge of scripture and devotion to Bible study. Many found reassurance and strength through his quiet guidance and compassionate spirit.
George William Wait will be remembered as a man of faith, generosity, service, boundless love, and a fun spirit that brought joy to everyone around him—a devoted father, a loyal mentor, and a gentle soul whose presence made others feel seen, valued, and uplifted.
A celebration of George’s life will be held at a later date.
The family is deeply grateful for the love, prayers, and support shown during this time. And as he always said, “Love is in the house.”
