She was born July 12, 1934 in Morganton, NC to the late John Thomas Smith and Alice Walker Smith.
Mrs. Howard was a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church for 28 years. She retired after 37 years of being a Register Nurse, including service at the Nalle Clinic in Charlotte.
Irene is survived by her husband of 59 years, Charles D. Howard; children, Charles Dennis Howard II (Karen Wall) of Raleigh, NC and Deborah Clark (Michael) of Indian Trail, NC; granddaughter, Taylor Elizabeth Clark of Indian Trail, NC; and her sister, Leila Chapman (Ned) of Raleigh, NC.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters.
A funeral service will be held at 11:30am on Monday, July 17, 2017 at Mt. Harmony Baptist Church, 2817 Mt. Harmony Church Rd., Matthews, NC 28105 with a visitation held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be sent to Mt. Harmony Baptist Church’s Building Fund.
