Jim was born in Charlotte, NC in 1941. As a child he was mischievous and strong-willed, and his playful mischief and resoluteness continued through his adolescence and into adulthood.
In 1957, as a starting pitcher, he led his baseball team at North Mecklenburg High School to the state championship. He went on to pitch for the minor league Newton Conover Twins in 1960 and 1961. In 1961 he returned to Charlotte to marry his middle school sweetheart.
In 1986 he Co-founded Atlantic Bolt, Inc., a construction fastener company from which he retired in 2007, making his son partner. The business was eventually taken over by both his children.
He was an accomplished golfer, with many tournament wins and 8 holes-in-one in his lifetime. From the age of 69 to 80 he shot his age or better 32 times. In retirement he continued to play golf, but his true joy was what he called “ball hawking” - spending countless hours hunting and gathering the balls that other golfers lost to the woods and ponds of the golf course he lived on in Mint Hill, NC.
Jim is preceded in death by his mother and father, Irene and Lacy Boyles, Sr., younger sister Madolyn and baby brother Lacy, Jr. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years Ann Boyles, his son James (Jimmy) Boyles, Jr. and wife Robin Boyles, his daughter Patricia (Trish) Boyles and wife Grace Sanders, his granddaughter Lauren Boyles, his sisters Linda Walker, Norma Kerr, Darlene Childress, sister-in-law Pam Boyles, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Celebration of Life information will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers or gifts, the family asks that you make a contribution in Jim’s name to the American Lung Association to aid in their work on smoking prevention and cessation (please see the donation link below).
