Jim was born into a tight knit, Christian family in western Kentucky. He served 8 years in the army,
raised a family, ran a successful small business, retired to spend time with family, and fostered a
longstanding faith in God.
Jim was feisty, stubborn, and did not back down from a strong belief. He loved music, whether
it was singing church hymns, playing guitar with family, or listening to bluegrass. His warm laugh
was contagious. Everyone knew he loved eating, but sharing a meal was also his way of spending
time with you. He could be a great listener, frequently offering a gentler perspective. He was
content helping out, especially running errands and working in the yard. He loved his family and
playing on the floor with his granddaughters was a favorite. Despite 21 years with Alzheimer’s
and failing speech, his eyes held his loving smile.
He is survived by his daughter, Kathy and husband Sanjib Mohanty; and grandchildren, Anna and
Mail Mohanty of Charlotte, NC. He is also survived by two sisters, Grace Marine and Carolyn
Hoover, both of Maryland. He is predeceased by his parents, Burt and Alma Garland; and his five
brothers, Jesse (J.D.) Garland, Joe Garland, Jack Garland, Ed Garland, and Connie Burton.
There will be a private service at Salisbury National Cemetery at 2 p.m. on September 8th.
A special thanks to the staff at Brighton Gardens of Charlotte and Hospice of Charlotte for the highest level of compassionate care.
Arrangements are being handled by McEwen Funeral Service-Mint Hill Chapel.
