

John Edward Ahrens, age 77, of Matthews, North Carolina, passed away on March 16, 2026. He was born on October 2, 1948, in Princeton, New Jersey, attended Princeton public schools, and graduated from Princeton High School in 1966. John earned his Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of Pittsburgh and his Master of Arts in French from the University of South Carolina. His academic pursuits led to a lifelong love of language and
learning which he generously shared in the classroom.
A dedicated educator, John devoted much of his life to teaching French, inspiring generations of students at Durham Academy in the 1970’s, Charlotte Country Day School in the 1990’s, and various educational institutions in between. He was deeply committed to his craft and known for his subject knowledge, impeccable French accent, classroom ambience, and department leadership. He formed valued and enduring relationships with his colleagues, who respected his intellect, wit, and professionalism.
Outside of his professional life, John had a wide range of passions. He was an avid sports enthusiast, with love for all teams Pittsburgh and most especially the Penguins. He was known for his remarkable memory, notably when it came to sports scores and player statistics—recalling details with impressive accuracy.
John also found joy in the companionship of dogs, especially whippets and cocker spaniels. The Charlotte Cocker Rescue of North Carolina was an organization near and dear to John’s heart. A train aficionado, he loved traveling by train across the United States and Canada, appreciating both the journey and the rich history of rail travel. John was a master storyteller, regaling friends with vivid tales of his childhood adventures, his days in the classroom, and his aforementioned travels. He will be remembered for his
sharp mind, quiet dedication, and the many lives he influenced through his teaching, friendships, and collegial bonds.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Col. John Herman Ahrens and Jane Blackwell Ahrens, and by his sister, Frances Ahrens Price. He is survived by his nephew, Carl Price of New Jersey, his cousin, Catherine McGrory Casey of Colorado, and lifelong friends Jon Ratner of Bethesda, Maryland and Russ Corsi of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
John often spoke with appreciation and gratitude for the assistance his neighbors offered him during his health challenges. Their help was essential not only in supporting his physical needs but also in raising his spirits.
A remembrance for friends and family will be held on Sunday, March 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the home of Neal and Tammy Nelson, 13716 Portpatrick Lane, Matthews, NC 28105. All are welcome.
