Born to Paul and Helen Shafer, Judy grew up in Storm Lake, Iowa, where she graduated from Storm Lake High School in 1960. She continued her education at the University of Iowa, earning a BA in Elementary Education in 1964. A lifelong Hawkeye fan, Judy remained a passionate advocate for teachers and education throughout her life.
On June 11, 1966, Judy married the love of her life, James Marshall Meskimen. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and adventure. They were blessed with two children, Elizabeth Jane and Bradley James, and later, five grandchildren—Reece, Raegan, Ross, Chloe, and Callan—who completed the circle of love that defined Judy’s world.
Judy’s life was a vibrant tapestry of passions and pursuits. She found joy in teaching, golf, bridge, dancing, party planning, and social gatherings. Her creativity and zest for life led her to co-author It’s Your Party, a book designed to inspire simple yet delightful theme party ideas. She also led memoir-writing workshops, helping others preserve their life stories—a gift treasured by many families.
Her career and adventures were as colorful as her personality. Judy owned a preschool in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and once performed as the fairy godmother at Disney World. She traveled widely, forming deep bonds with her “Ya Ya grandmas” and later, her “Ha Ha sisterhood,” groups that brought her immense joy and laughter.
Judy was deeply connected to her community and cherished her affiliations with many women’s groups, including her high school cheerleading squad, Alpha Delta Pi sorority, Junior League, TTT Society, PEO Sisterhood, AAUW, and countless other circles of friendship.
She is survived by her daughter Elizabeth Jane; her grandchildren Reece, Raegan, Ross, Chloe, and Callan; her sister Jane Shafer Else (Harlan); and many dear friends whose lives she touched with her warmth, humor, and generosity.
Judy’s legacy is one of Living – Loving – Laughing. Her spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.
