Originally of Princeton, West Virginia, June was the 5th child of Fred and Viola Williams and graduated with the Peterstown High School class of 1946. She began working at Celanese Fibers as a teenager and continued with them for about 20 years. A fashion show model and charismatic young woman, it was at Celanese that June met her husband, David Alkire, a smart and handsome young man to whom the office matchmakers quickly had her paired. June and Dave were married for 56 years when he preceded her in death. Together they had one daughter, Kristen, to whom they gave their heart and soul.
After moving to Charlotte in 1969, June volunteered as a tutor, Sunday School teacher, parent volunteer at Providence Day School, and member of the Olde Mecklenburg Genealogical Society, Providence United Methodist Church, and the Marketing Team at Plantation Estates in Matthews, North Carolina.
June will be remembered as a vibrant and loving woman who would walk through fire for her family and friends. She would never leave the side of a loved one who was suffering or hesitate to dedicate herself sacrificially to the well-being of others. She was a doting mother and grandmother, and a true Southern lady. June always had a smile and hug to share and brought happiness to the world around her, even in her final days.
Mrs. June Alkire is survived by her daughter, Kristen Alkire Eshleman of Charlotte, her son-in-law, Jonathan, and grandchildren, Ethan, Kelsey and Evan. She will be greatly missed.
The family will celebrate the lives of both June and Dave at Plantation Estates, 733 Plantation Estates Drive in Matthews, on Saturday March 11, 2017 at 1:30 in the afternoon.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in June’s name to Hospice and Palliative Care, Charlotte Region, 1420 East 7th Street, Charlotte, North Carolina 28204.
Arrangements under the direction of McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel, Mint Hill, North Carolina.
