

Born Marjorie Rae Tobin on August 25, 1917, in Detroit, MI, she was a daughter of the late Benjamin Franklin Tobin II and Harriet Rae Walker Tobin. She grew up in Grosse Pointe, MI, and was a graduate of Grosse Pointe High School. Known to her friends as Tobie, she attended Mary Baldwin College, where she graduated in 1940 with a BA in History. Following graduation, her family moved to Dallas, TX, where she worked at the original Neiman Marcus store. In the late 1940s, she met the love of her life, Tom Burke. They married on July 15, 1950, at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills. When Tom started working with IBM in 1953, the Burkes moved to the Hudson Valley in New York State where they raised their four sons. In 1979, the Burkes moved to Charlotte where Marjorie was a member of Sardis Presbyterian Church and Carolina Golf and Country Club. Marjorie was a volunteer in the community, a loyal friend and a beloved wife mother and grandmother.
Mrs. Burke was preceded in death by her brother, Benjamin Franklin Tobin, III; and her sister, Elizabeth Tobin Thompson. She is now reunited with her husband, Thomas Ulic Burke, who passed away in March of this year.
Marjorie Burke is survived by her four sons: Paul Burke and wife, Kathryn Kelaher, of Acton, MA; Larry Burke and wife, Linda Burke, of Asheville, NC; Brian Burke of Boxborough, MA; and Jim Burke and wife, Judith Bloch, of Seattle, WA; grandchildren Peter Burke, Johnnie Burke, Willie Burke, and Lani Bouwer; and great-grandchildren Chloe Joyce and Holli Carrington.
The family will receive friends from 7 – 9PM on Friday, July 6, at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel, 7428 Matthews-Mint Hill Road, Mint Hill. A funeral service to celebrate her life will be held at 11AM, Saturday, July 7, at Sardis Presbyterian Church, 6100 Sardis Road, Charlotte, with the Rev. Dr. J. Thomas Kort officiating. It will be preceded by a reception at 10. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens.
