Martha Rose (Miller) Smiley

Martha Rose (Miller) Smiley, 86, of Matthews, North Carolina was called home to Heaven as one of God's lambs on Thursday, August 24, 2023. She was born in Glendale Springs, North Carolina on December 5, 1936 to Kenneth and Cleo Miller.

Martha graduated from Jefferson High School in Ashe county and went on earn a bachelor's degree from Montreat College in Montreat, North Carolina. She met her husband, David Smiley, on the first day of daily vacation Bible school in 1958 and were married in 1960. They started a loving family of two children and then moved to Charlotte, NC in 1967. Martha's faith was very important to her and she felt a calling to teach Sunday school classes for a number of years. She also taught elementary school 1959 to 1994.

Martha and David enjoyed taking Christian Tours over the years. She also enjoyed annual trips to the beach with her mother and occasional trips around the country with her family. Her friendly smile and warm personality will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Martha is survived by her beloved husband of 63 years, David Smiley; her children, Jeff Smiley and Karen Edwards (Howard); her grandchildren, Nathan Gunzenhauser and Claire Mabon (Connor); her brother, L. Thomas Miller; her nephew, Chris Miller (Christy); and many other loving extended family members.

A Celebration of Martha's Life will be held at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, August 30, 2023 at Calvary Church's Chapel, 5801 Pineville-Matthews Rd, Charlotte, NC. A visitation will be held prior from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Burial will be private.
