Michael C. Goodman, 80, passed away on August 12, 2017. He was born and raised in Mehlenburg Co, KY. At 17, he joined the Marines where he served for four years, attaining the rank of Sergeant. After his discharge from active duty, he moved to Shelby, NC, where he attended Gardner Webb University. It was in Shelby that he met his future wife, Rose Hamrick, whom he married in 1957. While at Gardner Webb, Mike was a member of the All-Conference Basketball Team.
Mike was preceded in his death by his parents, OK and Cliffie Goodman; his sister, Wilma; and brother, Jackson. He is survived by his wife, Rose Hamrick Goodman; three children, Janet Goodman Fiedor and her husband, Kent, Richard (Rick) Thomas Goodman and his wife, Joelyn, Jeffrey (Jeff) Michael Goodman and his wife, Katherine; nine grandchildren, and one great grandchild.
Mike’s professional career began with Kellogg’s, where he achieved numerous sales awards and promotions that took him away from North Carolina. But the call to be back in North Carolina was strong, and Mike and Rose chose to move to Charlotte where he became a Food Broker. In 1975, he became President of the Grocery Manufacturers Representatives Association in Charlotte. Also during this time, Mike took the opportunity to mentor and influence many young boys by coaching Pop Warner Football for over 10 years, and was an active Shriner. After 35 years as a Food Broker, Mike retired and started a new life of volunteer service. He became an active member of the Marine Corps League, Charlotte Detachment #750; a member of the American Legion Post #235; and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #4059. As a member of the Marine Corp League, he served as Commandant; was the Food Manager for the Marine Corps Disaster Relief, where the team spent almost a week serving 500 people 3 meals a day after the destruction of Hurricane Katrina; and served on both the Ceremonial and “Fallen Marine” Teams.
He was a man who loved the Marines, golf and football, but first and foremost his family and God.
A service to celebrate the life of Mike Goodman will be held at 2:00PM on Sunday, September 3, at McEwen Funeral Service, Mint Hill Chapel in Mint Hill, NC. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 12:30PM at the funeral home. He will be buried in a private ceremony in the family cemetery located in Shelby, NC.
