

Michael Edward Thompson, Sr., 70, of Charlotte, NC, passed away peacefully on March 7th, 2025, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC, surrounded by dozens of loved ones after a heartbreaking fight against pancreatic cancer, a testament to his profound impact in the lives of those who loved him. He was born on December 17, 1954, at Presbyterian Hospital in Charlotte, NC, to Bernice L. Thompson and Juanita Prince Thompson.
Michael graduated from Garinger High School in 1973, completed a BA from UNCC, and began his career in the insurance business in 1977. Award-winning and committed, Michael’s hard work led him to earn his own agency in 1992. He built a core team who carry on his legacy as a trusted advisor impacting generations through sound planning. Michael also believed in giving back to the community serving as past board chairman, donor, and fundraiser of the Morrison YMCA, he was pivotal in helping the “Y” come to life with an emphasis on helping children in need, taking particular pride in their initiatives to help kids improve their reading skills.
Known for his charm, quick-wit and humor, his ability to befriend anyone from all walks of life and all parts of the world was truly amazing. Mike enjoyed a long membership at Ballantyne Country Club as an avid golfer, and was an original PSL season ticket holder for the Carolina Panthers until retiring in 2023 and moving to Hilton Head Island, SC. An accomplished self-taught guitar player, and music lover, Mike also loved traveling the world with his wife Kris as they visited 37 countries and all 50 states. But above all, he devoted himself to going above and beyond for his family and friends as a husband, brother, father, uncle, grandfather, and friend.
Survivors include his adored wife of 26 years, Kris Thompson; son, Michael Edward Thompson, Jr. (Tricia); son, Bradford Alan Thompson; daughter, Kirra Marcelle Sherman; daughter, Traci Thompson Todd (Ben); sister, Kathy Thompson Cotten (Thomas); sister in law, Alana McNulty (John); grandchildren, Isabella, Lexie, Presley, Charlotte, Camryn, and Dylan; in addition to beloved nieces and nephews on both coasts.
The Thompson family invites you to celebrate Mike at the Morrison YMCA in Charlotte, NC, on Saturday April 5th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. with his best buddy, Gene Morris presiding. Attire is business casual or in your best athleisure wear like Vuori, Mike's favorite.
