

Doug “OD” Simpson, 74, went home to be with his Lord on Saturday, April 4, 2015, at Levine & Dickson Hospice House in Charlotte, NC, after a lengthy fight with prostate and bone cancer. The family will receive friends at McEwen Funeral Home Mint Hill on Monday, April 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 pm and a funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 7, at 11:00 am at Arlington Baptist Church, 9801 Arlington Church Road, Charlotte, NC 28227.
He was born in Monroe, NC, on February 23, 1941, to the late Jep Brown Simpson and the late Josephine Ester Edwards Simpson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Barbara. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Brenda Ferguson Simpson; his daughters, Cynthia Simpson Long (Tim) of Charlotte; Christi Simpson Killian of Mint Hill; and Leslee Simpson Horner (Mark) of Tallahassee, FL; and grandchildren, Meagan Long of New York, NY; Madison Long Godsell (Ben) of Mooresville, NC; Sydney Killian & Lyndsey Killian of Mint Hill; and Bella Horner & Callee Horner of Tallahassee, FL; brothers, Joel Simpson (Valerie) of Sumter, SC; Lewis Simpson (Pat) of Westerly, RI; J.B. Simpson of Indian Trail, NC; Jeff Simpson of Mainz, Germany; sister, Susie Wiggins (Robert) of Stallings, NC; stepmother, Ruth Simpson of Concord, NC; stepsister, Shirley Kimbrough of Monroe, NC; and family friend, Lee Stilwell of Charlotte, NC.
After attending Benton Heights High School, Doug served 5 years in the United States Air Force and retired from the Air National Guard. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 37 years. After retiring from there, he went to work for Central Piedmont Community College until his health forced him to retire. His strong work ethic was apparent in all he did, whether it was on the job, around the house, at his girls’ homes, or in his garden. Doug also liked traveling to the beach and playing golf. He enjoyed hanging out with his “Breakfast Club” buddies and friends from the Charles Hartsell Sunday School class of Arlington Baptist Church, where he was a long-time member and Deacon. He also served as past Master of the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge #742.
