Born on March 27, 1949, in Plattsburgh, New York, Bob was the son of Henry and Helen (Plumley) Hough. He was raised in Union Falls, New York, where his love for family, learning, and the outdoors first took root.
Bob's journey through life took him from the small towns of upstate New York to the coast of Maine and finally to North Carolina. He lived in Keeseville, New York, and Gorham, Maine, before settling in Matthews, where he spent his final years close to his children and grandchildren.
Bob distinguished himself in the engineering field within the transportation industry. His career included contributions to the Delaware & Hudson Railroad and the Maine Department of Transportation. He achieved undergraduate degrees in both Civil Engineering and Business, as well as a Master of Business Administration and a Master's degree in Industrial Technology. He showed his children they could do anything, from building the family's first house, half pipes, treehouses and bedroom furniture. He personified the motto "I can do that".
Bob's greatest joy came from his family. He was a devoted husband to his wife Linda for 53 wonderful years. They loved to travel and were rarely apart. Together, they built a life filled with love, adventure, and cherished memories. He was a loving father to his sons Jeremy and Chris as well as their wives Julie and Kelly, and a doting grandfather to his grandsons Will, Robby, Henry, and Jones. As an uncle, he brought the same warmth and care that defined all his relationships.
Those who knew Bob will remember his deep love for the outdoors. He found peace and happiness camping and hiking through wooded trails, walking hand in hand with Linda along sandy beaches, and gathering with family and friends on decks and porches where stories were shared and memories were made.
Bob leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication. His influence will continue to guide his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
He is survived by his wife Linda Hough; sons Jeremy and his wife Julie, and Chris and his wife Kelly; grandsons Will, Robby, Henry, and Jones; nieces, and many extended family members whose lives he touched.
Funeral service will be held 11am on Friday July 11, 2025 at St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Charlotte, NC.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association or simply taking a moment to enjoy the outdoors with friends and family in Bob's memory.
