Pete was born on April 10, 1933, to the late Lonnie W. Smith and Cora Green Smith in Colombia, SC. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased in death by three sisters and one brother.
Surviving are his wife, Vivian W. Smith; and children, Van Smith (Susan), Vernon Smith (Carol), Melody Steigerwalt (Don), and Melissa Spann (Curt); one sister, Faye Johnson; and eight grandchildren, Katie Coccia (Andrew), Taylor Camacho (Greg), Ryan Steigerwalt, Nathan Spann, Tanner Smith, Luke Steigerwalt, Caleb Spann, and Jacob Spann.
Pete served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955 and worked for AT&T for 33 years. He was an active member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, greeter, and Sunday school teacher.
A celebration of life service will be held 11:00 am Saturday, March 27, 2021, at Hickory Grove Baptist Church Harris Blvd. Campus Worship Center, 7200 East W.T. Harris Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
