Fred was born on February 24, 1939, in Kingston, Jamaica. He lived there until he and his family moved to the US. Fred was an outgoing person; he enjoyed meeting people and made friends wherever he went.
Fred believed in a sound educational foundation. He made sure his own children could read and do simple math before they started school. And he, along with his wife Phyllis, donated to charities that helped educate both children and adults.
Fred’s favorite things were his garden and home repair. He loved gardening, from drawing up plans for his garden each year, cultivating the seeds, planting them, and tending to his garden as it grew. Neighbors and passersby often complimented his “garden scaping.” As a true do-it-yourselfer, Wilfred enjoyed doing his own home and car repairs. He relished those “aha” moments when the car started or the icemaker started working again.
Fred is survived by his spouse of 57 years, Phyllis Dawes; his children, Raymond Dawes, Andrea Dawes, Deanna Scoones (husband Larry), and Wayne Dawes (wife Cassandra); his grandchildren, Walter, Catherine, and Ariana; and by his sisters, Adrienne Harrison, Sydney Parkins, Michele Dawes, and Natalie Evans.
Family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 am on Friday, April 25th, 2025 at McEwen Mint Hill Chapel 7428 Matthews Mint Hill Rd. Mint Hill, NC 28227. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00 am in the chapel.
