Born on September 9, 1938, Wilma was the eldest of two daughters born to the late Harold Holmes and Thelma Sargeant. A wise, steadfast, and dedicated matriarch, she spent most of her life in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she was a pillar of strength and reliability within her community. There, she generously shared her time, wisdom, and love with all who knew her. Later in life, Wilma and her youngest, Michael, moved south to live with her eldest son and daughter-in-law, Bobby Jr. and Marilyn. She will be lovingly remembered for her unwavering commitment to her loved ones and the lasting impact she made on those around her.
From a young age, Wilma possessed a formidable spirit and pursued her passions wholeheartedly and with dedication. These included singing, teaching, raising awareness and funds for causes close to her heart, and selling antiques and collectables with her late husband. For a brief period, she followed her love of music and toured the country performing with The Garrison Singers and The Voices of Mt Hermon. After graduating from Ridley High School and Cheyney State University, Wilma earned a Master’s degree in Education from Temple University and devoted her professional life to shaping young minds. She taught second grade for 35 years, forming deep bonds with her students and fiercely advocating for their success, often saving the work of her star pupils long after the school year ended and earning Southeast Delco School District Teacher of the Year in 1983. Even in later years, her passion for teaching endured, as she delighted in listening to her granddaughters and great-granddaughters read to her. After retiring in 1996, she served as a trustee and board member for the Kardon Institute of Art Therapy and Partnership for Community Supports, and as a member of the Consortium Advisory and Philadelphia County MR Advisory Council.
On November 17, 1962, Wilma married the love of her life, Robert Lawrence Jones Sr. (Bob). Their bond was undeniable, and together they built a partnership rooted in faith, strength, and unwavering devotion. Wilma was a loving and devoted mother to her two sons, Bobby Jr. and Michael. Alongside Bob, she laid a steady foundation that shaped Bobby Jr.’s life, and through her extraordinary dedication and committed care for Michael, she enabled all who knew him to cherish his life far beyond what many thought possible. Wilma’s influence and legacy live on through the accomplishments of her family, standing as a testament to her wisdom, resilience, and steadfast love. While residing in Philadelphia, the family were faithful and active members of Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.
Wilma was a cherished daughter, sister, cousin, aunt, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and treasured member of her community.
