Hazen Eugene Cornelius

Hazen Eugene Cornelius, 80, of Chattanooga, TN, passed away Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at his residence. A native of Lincoln, Michigan, he has been a resident of the Chattanooga area for the past 40 years and was a member of St. Jude Catholic Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard and was a member of the Chattanooga Photographic Society and the Appalachian Trail Conservancy. He was the son of the late Shirley William and Leora Somers Cornelius and was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Peter Cornelius and his sister, JoAnn Kading. Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Madelaine Cornelius; daughter, Mary (Barry) Ketterer, Chattanooga; three grandchildren, Rebecca (Hudson) Ellis, Jonathan David Ketterer and Elizabeth Megan Ketterer; brother, Hubert Cornelius, Spruce, MI; one neice and several nephews. A private interment for the family will be Friday morning in the Chattanooga National Cemetery. A Mass Celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the St. Jude Catholic Church with Father Charlie Burton officiating. In lieu of flowers the family suggest memorial contributions be made to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN or to the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, P.O. Box 807, Harpers Ferry, WV 25425-9988. The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Friday at the Valley View Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory & Florist, 7414 Old Lee Highway.
