

Born in Clinton, South Carolina to the late Otto and Maude Griffin, he was preceded in death by his brother, Bill Griffin. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years, Polly Griffin, his two daughters Pat Sharp (Albeon) and Katlynn Griffin (Paul), his two sons Michael Griffin (Beth) and Marty Griffin, his four grandchildren Lynn Sharp, Jimmy Sharp (Kat), Sarah Beth Griffin, and Bryana Griffin. In addition, he was blessed with three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
In his earlier years, Chief Petty Officer James Griffin served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman before retiring in 1965 after 20 years of honorable service. His shipboard assignments included USS BENEVOLENCE (AH-13), USS CORRY (DD-817), USS MARKAB (AD-21), and USS INTREPID (CVA-11). His travels in the Navy included time in the Mediterranean Sea, Far East, and the Pacific Ocean. While serving aboard USS BENEVOLENCE (AH-13) he participated in Operation Crossroads, the nuclear weapon tests conducted by the United States at Bikini Atoll within the Marshall Islands in mid-1946. Retiring from Naval Communications Training Center, Pensacola, FL, he eventually took his skills and talents in the medical field to Ciba Geigy in McIntosh, AL and settled in Jackson, AL before moving to Leroy, AL. After retiring from Ciba Geigy and working a few additional years with the Brown and Root company, James decided to embrace retirement and moved to the mountains of Lake Lure, NC and eventually to his final home in Cleveland, TN.
James was also a Mason and had been a member of Marshall A. Weir Lodge No 448, F.& A. M. Macon, GA.
A private family gathering will take place on Saturday, March 4, 2023.
